Promoting Conservation and Empowering Communities through Radio

vehicle with ORKCA branding

On the 13th of January, ORKCA had the privilege of being hosted by Kaisemas FM, an Indigenous Nama Radio station under the National Broadcaster, to discuss the role of communal conservancies in Southern Namibia. Representing ORKCA was our dedicated Community Program Officer, Alton Tsowaseb, who spoke to the ways ORKCA aims to support and collaborate with these conservancies.

Radio remains a key element of communication in rural areas, especially in Namibia, whereby it creates awareness about critical issues such as conservation, community work, and sustainable resource management. Kaisemas FM serves as a powerful platform for the Conservancy Management Committee (CMC).

During the interview, we discussed how communal conservancies in Southern Namibia play a large role in conserving biodiversity, creating livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable land use. ORKCA’s efforts focus on strengthening these conservancies through capacity building, technical support, and empowering local communities to manage their natural resources effectively.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share these stories and insights with the wider public. Platforms like Kaisemas FM are media platforms- lifelines- that connect, and inform communities across the country.

At ORKCA, we firmly believe that conservation success begins with people. By partnering with communities and leveraging impactful tools like radio, we hope to work together toward a sustainable future for both people and nature.
